Dark and Stormy Drink

Happy Halloween!!! We kicked off the holiday yesterday with a couple segments on all things Halloween on Fox 29 yesterday and it couldn’t have been more fun. Landon stayed home for the first half and helped out with these Witch Finger cookies….he’s a total natural on camera….and then we made a few crafty things that I’m saving for you all next year.

Don’t worry, I’ll make sure they’re all done in time for you to spend all the dollars at your local craft store but this Blood Orange Dark and Stormy Drink was soooo good I decided to share it here with you today! It’s so easy to whip up at the last minute, too.

So, even if you’re not having a party tonight you can totally fix this for yourself to sip on while doling out candy to the creepy little goblins ringing the doorbell.

What is a Dark and Stormy drink?

A Dark N Stormy is a highball drink made with dark rum and ginger beer served over ice then garnished with lime. Rumor has it that the drink was invented in Bermuda shortly after World War I and doesn’t traditionally use lime in the recipe but I love the citrus punch it adds to the drink.

For this Blood Orange Dark N Stormy, I replaced the lime juice with freshly squeezed blood orange juice for a winter twist that is fruity and fantastic!

What Rum To Use

There are so many different types of rum that will all offer up a different flavor profile in your Dark N Stormy so be sure you use one that you love, personally. I like a lighter spiced rum for this Blood Orange Dark and Stormy since it’s the fall season and everything seems to be “spiced.”

Also, your ginger beer selection will affect the flavor of your drink so be sure to choose one that you know and love.

Can you use Ginger Ale in a Dark and Stormy?

You certainly can use ginger ale in place of the Ginger Beer but the ginger flavor will be less pronounced……and the whole drink will taste much different than intended.

However, sometimes Ginger Beer is hard to find so ginger ale would be a fine substitute if you’re having trouble locating Ginger Beer.

How To Make It

Making a Dark and Stormy drink couldn’t be easier and it’s ready in minutes with these simple steps:

  1. Place ice in a high ball glass.
  2. Pour the rum and ginger beer over the ice.
  3. Top the rum and ginger beer with the blood orange juice.
  4. Garnish with an orange slice and serve.

How easy is that? And it’s the perfect party drink for fall and winter with the warm spices from the rum and the bright citrusy flavor of the blood orange. It’s a great signature co*cktail if you don’t have one already and I like to serve it along with these easy appetizers when I’m hosting impromptu parties:

  • Cranberry Brie Bites
  • The Best Hot Crab Dip EVAHHHH!
  • Sausage Stuffed Mushrooms….everyones favorite
  • Super easy Clams Casino.…better than a restaurant
