In the film, Cassandra Salazar (played by Sofia Carson) performs "I Didn't Know" at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, California, near the end of the plot. The film's director Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum explained, "Originally, the script was set in Austin and there were shades of Country in the music, but once we changed it to California, we decided to go more pop singer/songwriter."
"I was terrified. My mom can attest to that, I called her crying multiple times, It was like, 'Who thought that I could do this? Who trusted me to do this? I've never written a soundtrack before!'" Sofia Carson told about writing this song in an interview for TheWrap.com on the 29th of July, 2022. Despite this, she told that the song "was magical to bring to life".
Sofia Carson co-wrote this track with Justin Tranter. She said about working with him in the film's press notes, "The first person that came to my mind and heart was the incomparable Justin Tranter. Justin is one of the most renowned writers of our time, with an incredible gift to write songs adored by the world."
